Eugene Aaron Bachtel (sic), near Union Mills, who suffered a fracture of the
skull in a collision Friday afternoon along the Westminster - Littlestown
highway, about five miles north of Westminster, died Sunday evening at
6 o'clock in the University hospital, Baltimore. His auto was in collision
with a Richardson Brothers' feed truck driven by Ira A. Nusbaum,
Westminster.
According to Maryland State Policeman G, E. Newcomer, Bachtel,
coming from Pennington's tavern, drove his auto out on the highway in
the direction of Littlestown into the path of the oncoming truck.
The impact of the two machines threw Bachtel out to the middle of the
road from the left hand door of his car. The truck had the two front
wheels smashed. Both machines were badly damaged.
Dr. W. G. Speicher, this city, who was summoned, rendered first aid and
had the injured man rushed to the
University Hospital, in the Westminster fire department ambulance.
Mr. Bachtel was a son of Howard and Lillie Null Bachtel and was aged
33 years. He leaves his wife, who before marriage was Miss Emma Stonesifer, and two children, Edward and Guy; also his parents, and three brothers. Herman, Westminster Route
2: Woodrow, Westminster, Route 1; and Kenneth, at home.
Funeral rites were conducted Wednesday, with services at 10 A. M. at
the J. W. Little & Son funeral home,
Littlestown. The Rev. A. M. Hollinger, pastor of St. Bartholomew's Lutheran church, of which he was a member, officiated. Burial was made in the New Church cemetery.
A charge of manslaughter was lodged against Mr. Nusbaum and he
was released under $500 bond for his appearance at Westminster on Tuesday next.
