Graveside services for Bennie Joe Selby, age 76, will be held Monday, Oct. 2nd 2006 at Tahlequah City Cemetery, with Rev. Ronnie Rice of First Baptist Church of Tahlequah officiating. Interment will follow under the directions of Hart Funeral Home.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Jared Selby, Calvin Selby, Chad Selby, Rick Couri and Kelly Couri.
Bennie Joe Selby passed away on Thursday, Sept. 28th, 2006. He was born on April 23rd, 1930 in Bowlegs, Ok, the son of Archie Sylvester Selby and Ann (Hicks) Selby. On August 19th, 1954, he married Helen "Vonnie" McCready, starting a marriage that would last over fifty-two years. Together he and Vonnie raised two sons.
Bennie earned an Associate's Degree in Business from San Antonio College. He served his country in the U.S. Army, serving both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He also served as a R.O.T.C. teacher for over twenty years, and several of his rifle teams were taken to the Olympics. He moved from San Antonio, Tx to the Tahlequah area ten years ago. He was a member of First Baptist, R.S.V.P. and the American Legion, and he gave his time as a volunteer at the Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed travel, fishing, hunting and playing cards. He loved spending time with his family, and was a good father who loved his sons dearly.
Bennie was preceeded in death by his parents, by Fred Selby his brother, and his two half brothers Gary Selby, and Charles Selby.
He is survived by his wife Vonnie, of the home; his sons, David Selby and wife Paula of Brownston, MI, and Michael Selby and wife Linna of Blairstown, N.J.; his 1/2 sisters, Ramona Cheek and husband of TX, and Marjorie Manors and husband Floyd of Soper, Ok; his uncle, Jamie Selby and wife June of Soper, Ok; his six grandchildren, Caitlin, Rachael, Jared, Matthew, and Calvin Selby of Blairstown, NJ and Chad Selby of Norman, Ok.; as well as many nieces, nephews, and loved ones. Bennie will be truly missed by all who knew him.
