James Garlon Maynor, 69, former Water valley mayor, died of heart failure Tuesday, March 4 at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. He was a World War II veteran.

He was mayor of Water Valley from 1976 to 1980 and from 1988 to 1992. He was owner of Maynor Motors. He had been a treasurer and administrative board member of North Main United Methodist Church.

He was a past grand master of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and had been a representative to Sovereign Grand Lodge, of which he was treasurer from 1986 to 1988.

He was a member of Water Valley Odd Fellows Lodge 82 and Rebekah Lodge 38, and a past commander of the local American Legion post. He also served on the finance committee of World Eye bank and Visual Research. He was a colonel under Gov. Cliff Finch and Gov. Ray Mabus committees.

He served on the Mississippi Municipal Liability Insurance Plan Committee and the executive board of the Mississippi Municipal Association. He was president of the North Mississippi Industrial Development Association.

He was a member of Water Valley Chamber of Commerce and Water Valley Economic Development panel.

Mr. Maynor, the husband of Christine Kisner Maynor, also leaves a son, Jimmy Maynor of Water Valley, a grandchild and a great-grandchild.
