Fifteen miles south of Dufur, in Wasco County, Oregon he took out a 640 acre homestead. He planted it to a variety of different things, including walnuts, peaches, plums and many catalpa trees.
Having had a good education he did teach school in the area for a number of terms.
In 1892 he sold his holdings in Wasco County and moved to the Odell area of the Hood River Valley and purchased 180 acres of the old Jess Neal Donation claim.
He worked on this farm until he finally sold it to his son Aubrey and retired to Medford.
