John Rose, age 86, of Tacoma, WA, passed away at home with his family on July 11, 2022.
John was born in Grand Rapids, MI on November 11, 1935 to Charles and Thelma Rose. John was a proud graduate of East Grand Rapids, MI schools and of University of Michigan's College of Engineering with a BSCE in 1958. John went to work for E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. In 1958, John moved to Seattle to work for Boeing for 8 years in various capacities in military aircraft and helicopter assignments.
In 1958, John met the love of his life, Sharon Rose, when she worked at Manning's Restaurant in Seattle. John & Sharon often reminisced about their meeting and courtship, but the most well-known story was when Sharon would make sure John got extra thick cuts of prime rib while dining at Manning's. They married in 1961, raised 4 children and were blessed with 9 grandchildren and enjoyed a 58-year marriage. John and Sharon enjoyed sailing, snow skiing Snoqualmie, White Pass and Sun Valley, bowling, periodic travel throughout the northwest and socializing with friends and family.
In 1966, John moved to a wood engineering position at American Plywood Association (APA Engineered Wood Association) as a research and later structural engineer in residential and commercial building construction. He worked at APA for 34 years on conventional and manufactured housing and commercial construction. During his tenure at APA, he specialized in structural research on earthquake and wind resistant design. He traveled to Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, to Kauai following Hurricane Iniki and to California after the Northridge earthquake to assess the damage. John was passionate about his research while at APA.
John had many longtime hobbies and interests including sailing, classic cars, watching Detroit Red Wings and U of Michigan football, kids and family, dogs and cats, bird watching, jazz music and social media. John owned his first sailboat, a Snipe 15' racing dinghy, in 1948 at age 12. He raced Snipes in Seattle with Lake Washington Fleet #444 until 1970, and collected, restored and sold classic Snipe sailboats from the period of 1948 until 2022. John was an author and sailboat historian for the Snipe Class International Racing Association, an international sailboat class (Snipe SCIRA). John developed, collected and maintained an extensive file of historical information on Snipe sailboats and owners around the world. During his lifetime, he owned 18 Snipes and 5 larger sailboats up to 26 feet. In addition, he loved buying, restoring and selling classic American automobiles from the early days. John recalled buying and restoring over 50 cars, many of which he wished he had never sold. John was actively engaged in his kids' and grandkids' school, scouting, sports and other family activities. He always had a huge heart for big dogs and cats, especially Golden Retrievers and a special big orange cat named Rascal. He also enjoyed backyard birding, attending live jazz concerts and watching recorded concert videos on YouTube at the highest volume possible. John loved being able to connect with friends and family over social media. From sailboat acquaintances around the world to East Grand Rapids History Room and East Grand Rapids High School connections, he valued his time to help people and trade stories from his youth.
John and Sharon provided a very stable and supportive home life for their three sons and daughter. It was the type of home where neighbors and friends would always gather. Many days and nights were filled with a household of kids laughing and having fun, homemade cookies after school, excellent food at every meal, house cleaned, clothes folded and dinner on the table when John came home from work. From impromptu backyard soccer games, to hoops in the driveway, friends' sleepovers, BBQs, holiday parties and much more. Some of the kids' best memories were seatbelt-free road trips in our family station wagon and van to Ocean Shores, Lake Chelan or Priest Lake, ID, RV camping down the Oregon Coast or trips to Disneyland. In 1978, John and Sharon hosted a German exchange student, Dirk Helbig from Berlin, Germany. Dirk lived at the Rose household for a year and was considered a part of the family and remains in contact to this day. The most memorable gift John gave his family was that of fun childhood memories and a good solid home life. For that, his kids are eternally grateful. His smile, sense of humor and outgoing personality will be missed by many who knew him.
John is preceded in death by his loving wife, Sharon, and brothers Thomas and Charles Rose. He is survived by sons Robert, David (Melinda) and Christopher (Carissa); daughter Valerie; and grandchildren Alexandra, Laura, Timothy, Samuel, Kylie, Mary, Gwenna, Jonathan, and Carter; and extended Rose family nieces, Deborah Rose, Leigh McGivern, and nephew Charles Rose.
Valerie and Alexandra would like to thank Envision Hospice nurse, Janet Ritchie, for her care and unique ability to connect with John. Her willingness to help coach us all through challenging times was greatly appreciated. In addition, a very special thank you to Dustin Coe and Brian Grimsley for their unwavering support to John, Valerie, and Alexandra.

At the wish of John, the family will hold a private graveside service. He did not wish to have a public celebration of life or memorial.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John Rose are appreciated to his favorite non-profit charities including East Grand Rapids School Foundation and Alumni Association – to the Endowment Fund, 2915 Hall St. SE, East Grand Rapids, MI 49506; Snipe Class International Racing Association (SCIRA) – Attn: Jerelyn Biehl, SCIRA USA Perpetual Fund 501 (c) (3), 2812 Canon St., San Diego, CA 92106; Attn: Treasurer, Finance Committee Grand Rapids Yacht Club PO Box 6444, Grand Rapids, MI 49516-6444 ; Golden Bond Rescue of Oregon PO Box 25391, Portland, OR 97298-0391; or a charity of choice.
