Memorial services for Bertha Jean "Bertie" Lindell, 84, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Private family inurnment will be at a later date.
Mrs. Lindell died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 7, 1923, in Parker, the daughter of Joseph Earl and Nellie Adeline Byerley Crabtree. She graduated from Paola High School in 1942 and later attended Huff Business College in Kansas City. She moved to Lawrence in 1945.
Mrs. Lindell worked at the Postal Life and Casualty Insurance Company in Kansas City, Mo. During World War II, she worked for Commonwealth Aircraft Inc., Glider Division, Plant No. 2, American Royal Building in Kansas City, Mo.
She was a secretary to the vice president of Kansas Electric Power. She also worked for the Kansas University physics department for many years, and she typed thesis papers for KU students. She worked for Noland Insurance Company and retired from the finance office at Lawrence High School in 1989 after 13 years of service.
Mrs. Lindell attended First Presbyterian Church and was a lifetime member of the Lawrence Women's Bowling Association. She was member of the Kaw Valley Studebaker Club, where she served as newsletter editor, and a member of the auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Alford-Clarke Post 852 and American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14.
She married Elmer E. Lindell on April 30, 1948, in Lawrence. He survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Larry Lindell and wife Sandy, Louisville, Ky.; a daughter, Connie Lindell-Hackett and husband Tony, Baldwin City; a sister, Lois Green and husband Delbert, Blue Springs, Mo.; two grandsons, Davis and Brian Lindell; two stepgranddaughters, Heather Rawleigh and Sherri McDonald; six stepgreat-grandchildren, Jeffery, Kodi, Ethan, Autumn, Michelle and Matthew; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Mrs. Lindell was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Sara Givens Westergren and Ina Lee "Pinky" Green.
