The Obituary of B. Harrison DECKER

The Rev. B. Harrison Decker was a good minister of Jesus Christ. He was a
son of the parsonage, in fact he was the third generation of Methodist
ministers in the Decker family. His grandfather, Rev. Sylvanus Drummond
Decker and his father, Rev. Everett Drummond Decker, had distinguished
ministries in the Philadelphia Conference.

A native of Hazelton, PA Harry with his family moved to Philadelphia, where
he attended Central High School and Temple University. Taylor University
awarded this distinguished young minister the degree of Doctor of Divinity.

Dr. Decker began his pastoral ministry in 1910, serving the North West Iowa
Conference, and in 1912 transferred to the New Jersey Conference. He then
began a series of successful pastorates in Southern new Jersey, serving nine
churches in this conference which included First Methodist Church, Audubon
from 1923 to 1927; First Methodist Church, Mt. Holly form 1927 to 1933;
Kemble Memorial, Woodbury from 1933 to 1935; First Methodist Church,
Collingswood from 1935 to 1940; First Methodist Church of Vineland from 1940
to 1946; and St. Paul¹s Methodist Church, Ocean Grove from 1946 to 1952.

In 1952 Bishop Fred Pierce Corson, resident Bishop of the then New Jersey
Conference, appointed Dr. Decker to be the superintendent of the New
Brunswick District. He served in this office until 1958, when the Southern
new Jersey Conference of the United Methodist Church granted him the retired
relationship.

Retirement for Dr. Decker was in name only, for this faithful pastor
continued to serve and continued to preach until his death. his pastorate
of over fifty years has left its mark on the New Jersey Conference. There
are many who enjoy the fellowship of Christ and each church he served
has been stronger because of his devoted Christian Service.

His charge conference membership after retirement was in St. Paul¹s Ocean
Grove where he and his faithful wife , the former Marion Martenis, attended.

Dr. Decker went to his eternal reward at age 82, on July 20, 1971, after an
illness spent in Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia.

He is survived by his wife Marion; one son Everett T.; four daughters, Mrs
Evelyn Alexander, Mrs Grace Burger, Mrs Evelyn Rose and Mrs. Harriet Blaetz;
ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A service of tribute was held in Ocean Grove on Friday, July 23, 1971 with
interment in the Bloomsbury Cemetery, Bloomsbury, NJ

The men who were privileged to serve with Harry were greatly enriched in
their Christian experience by his wise counsel and dedicated life to his
Savior, his family and his friends.

This is a better world because Harry Decker lived.
