William Henry Vercoe, 77, for many years a Manson pharmacist, died Wednesday, October 11, after an illness of several months duration.

He was born in Tacoma, Territorial Washington, December 23, 1883. His father was a pioneer doctor and his mother a teacher on the Puyallup Indian Reservation.

In 1906, he graduated from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Washington. Before coming to Chelan in 1934, he operated a drug store in Bellingham and owned a farm in Burlington. In 1935, he moved to Manson operating the Manson Drug Store until his retirement.

One of his foremost interests was the Red Cross, and he served as chairman for a number of years. Another was the Rotary Club. He was a charter member of the Manson group, and held many offices and attended meetings of Rotary International.

Mr. Vercoe was a member of the Manson Community church and belonged to the Odd Fellows Lodge in Chelan. He held membership in the Skagit Valley Pioneer association, and the State Pioneer Association. Manson high school students honored him by dedicating one of their annuals to him.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Edith, who passed away in 1952. Survivors are two sons, Harold Vercoe, Tacoma and Ralph Vercoe, New York City; two daughters, Mrs. Lucile Hubbard, Manson, and Mrs. Gertrude Johnson, Seattle, a brother, James Vercoe, Tacoma; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at two o'clock Saturday afternoon, from the Manson Community church with the Rev. Eugene Hibbard officiating. Interment was in Riverview cemetery, Jones and Jones Funeral Home in charge.
