Bob was born on May 18, 1927 in Deadwood, SD to Maurice and Loula (Hines) Mason. Prior to his graduation from high school, Bob decided to serve his country by joining the Navy during World War II from April 12, 1945 to July 1, 1946. After his military service, he came back to graduate from Lead High School in 1948.
On June 27, 1948 Robert married the love-of-his-life Evelyn Irene Dryer at Hannah, SD. Bob worked for Homestake Mining Company for forty-three years; he held several positions which included, pin setter at the Homestake Bowling Alley, timber cutter, a shaft man, contract miner and his final position before he retired from Homestake was a load dispatcher at the Kirk Power Plant.
Bob, along with his wife, were involved in a wide variety of community activities. They helped to begin the local Retarded Children's Association and they were instrumental in the start of the Lords Cupboard in Lead and the Lead Clothing Center. He was also an active member of the historical society, the Masons, the Shriners and was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.
Over the years he enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, golfing, camping, gold panning, golfing, bowling, spending time with his family and friends…And did we forget to mention that he loved golfing.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, sons; Robert Mason , Rapid City, Steve (Launa) Mason, Lead, daughters; Linda (Dan) Green, Spearfish, and Deanna (Darryl) Cornell, Lead, grandchildren. Dalane (Trina) Cornell, Casey Cornell, Christy Robertson, Shawn Mason, Melissa Mason, and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Maurice, Delvin, Don, Howard, great-grandson, Kyle Harvey and Christy's husband Randy Robertson.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead with Rev. Bruce Adams officiating. Inurnment will take place Thursday, January 31st at Mt. Lawn Cemetery in Lead.
