Thomas P. Kemp, former chairman and chief executive of Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Los Angeles and former president of Beatrice/Hunt-Wesson Foods, has died. He was 75.

Kemp, a brother of former NFL star, congressman and secretary of Housing and Urban Development Jack Kemp, died April 26 of an apparent heart attack while swimming at a pool in Laguna Beach, said his daughter Anne Kemp Hummel.

The obituary of corporate executive Thomas P. Kemp in Thursday's California section said Kemp's brother, Jack Kemp, was a vice presidential candidate in 1988. In fact, he campaigned unsuccessfully for the Republican presidential nomination in 1988 and was the Republican vice presidential candidate in 1996.

Thomas P. Kemp, brother of one-time Chargers quarterback and vice presidential candidate Jack Kemp and a former chairman of the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Los Angeles, has died. He was 75.

Mr. Kemp died unexpectedly of a heart attack April 26 in Laguna Beach, his brother said. He was swimming at the time.

Mr. Kemp was chairman and chief executive of the independent Coca-Cola firm until 1982, when it was acquired by Beatrice Cos. and he became president of Beatrice/Hunt-Wesson Foods. He retired four years later but kept busy with charity, business and political work.

Mr. Kemp's younger brother, Jack, is a former NFL quarterback who went on to become a Republican congressman for New York and Sen. Bob Dole's vice presidential running mate in the 1996 election.

"Tom was a hero of mine," Jack Kemp told The Associated Press. "He inspired me to go into professional football, was always encouraging as he followed my political career."

He said his brother was kind to people, irrespective of their politics or station in life.
"After he died I got e-mails from his postman, his housekeeper, his gardener. He just loved people," Kemp said.

Mr. Kemp was vice chairman of Pepperdine University's Board of Regents, a consultant to the 1994 World Cup soccer tournament and a part-owner of the now-defunct California Surf soccer team, said his daughter Anne Kemp Hummel of Los Angeles' Northridge section.

He also served on the board of a software company, Optimus EMR, Inc. He was chairman of the company from 2000 to 2005, when it was known as OneTouch Technologies.

"He cared deeply for young people, for his country, for democracy and for the virtues of capitalism," she said.

Besides his daughter, son and brother, who lives in Bethesda, Md., Mr. Kemp is survived by daughters Paula Donahue of Irvine and Nancy Kemp of Laguna Niguel; a son, Thomas P. Kemp Jr. of Laguna Beach; six grandchildren; and brothers Paul R. Kemp Jr. in Fort Bragg, and Richard D. Kemp of Irvine.
