John Benson, second son of Col. Geo. W.K. and Mercene Elizabeth Bailey, was born August 11, 1866, at Pittsfield, Illinois. He departed this life at Hayden, Arizona, on April 15, 1930, having reached the age of 63 years, 8 months and 4 days.

He came with his parents to Kansas in 1880 and located in Greenwood County about sixteen miles northwest of Eureka.

Mr. Bailey was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Hellman in February 14, 1890. To this union were born two sons: Seward B. and Ferdenand of Hayden, Arizona.

The family sontinued to live in Greenwood County and later in Butler until 1915. The wife and mother departed this life 28 November 1919.

Beside the two sons there remains of his immediate family, on brother, W.E.W. Bailey, of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, and one sister, Mrs. S.W. Thompson, Ontario, Oregon, also a number of cousins and neices.

He spent much of his time with a nephew, W.O. Blackburn before going to Arizona last June, where he made his home with the son, Seward.

Mr. Bailey spent a number of years in the southwest. During this time served as a peace officer of the state and for various corporation and organizations.

He had been in failing health for a number of years but was not taken seriously ill until three days before his death.

In many ways the departed was a very unsual man. He had many outstanding traits of character. He was possessed with no small amount of courage. He was a big hearted and always generous to a fault.

The funeral service was held in Christ Lutheran Church, Tuesday afternoon at 3:30, and the body was laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery.
