Emily Harrison Bates, 91, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord Thursday, October 3, 2002. She was the widow of Robert Lee Bates. She is survived by her sister, Caroline Kahl; her brother, Joseph M. Smyth; four half sisters, Frances Price, Ellen Napier, Ruth Miles and Nancy Wright; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bates was a retired teacher having taught for 20 years in Chesterfield County and 5 years in Richmond. She was an active member of Lyndale Baptist Church and Central Baptist Church serving as a Sunday school teacher for both.
