Sergeant First Class Matthew Kahler, of Granite Falls, Minnesota, was a 1997 graduate of Yellow Medicine East High School. He had decided to join the military at the age of ten, taking his father's advice joining the Special Forces. Matt married his high school sweetheart, Vicki L. Streich, on December 26, 1998, in Granite Falls Lutheran Church. During his career Matthew served in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, one tour of duty in Iraq and was presently on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, serving with the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, based at Vicenza, Italy. He received numerous awards including, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts. He was hit by small-arms fire in the village of Waygul and died at an army base in Fenty. He is survived by his father, Ron Kahler of Searles; his mother, Colleen (nee (Swenson) Kahler of Montevideo; siblings: Doug Kahler, Chicago; Brian Kahler, Willmar; Patrice Kahlerluker, New Ulm; step-mother Shellie (Cole) Kahler and step-brothers Jesse Larson, Pennock; Specialist Justin Larson - combat medic with the Red Bulls unit, New Ulm and Jared Larson who resides with Ron and Shellie in Searles.
