Ludwell C C Estes is the son of James Alonzo Estes and Margarett M Turnage. He married Martha A Hill on 19 July, 1870 although there records that indicate they may have married in 1865 in Beford County, Tennessee.

Ludwell and Martha had 5 children:

Ludwell served in the Civil War beginning 26 Nov 1861 when he joined the Confederate 48th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. (Voorhies) At some point before February 1862, he was captured and held at Fort Donelson, near Nashville. On Feb 16 1862 he was moved to Camp Douglas.

While being held here as a prisoner of war, he was offered the chance to join the Union and on Dec 16 1864 joined with his brother-in-law William D Hill in the 4th Tennessee, Mounted Infantry. The primary job was to fight guerrilla units operating across Middle Tennessee.

On Aug 25, 1865 the unit was mustered out.
