Al is survived by his wife of 46 years, Susan D'Alonzo Ament; three children Austin Ament of Tampa, Florida; Danielle DeCarlo (Kevin DeCarlo) and children Anthony, Gabrielle, and Adelina of Freeland, Maryland; Jonathan Ament (Courtney Borton Ament) and children Sawyer and Sloane of Charlotte, North Carolina; two foster children Tawanna Gans of Wilmington, Delaware and Jessica Samson of Clearlake, California; sister Robin Schlotterback of Middletown, Delaware, brother James Ament of Bear, Delaware, brother David Ament of Litchfield Park, Arizona, and many nieces and nephews. Al is predeceased by his sister, Shirley Lednum and brother-in-law, Thomas D'Alonzo.
Al proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps before beginning a 20 year career with the Delaware State Police, where he served from May1, 1969 to May 1, 1989. He was stationed at Troop 1 Penny Hill, Troop 2 State Road and Headquarters Dover. He served in both the Traffic and Criminal Divisions and was a Public Information Officer (P.I.O.) and the Legal Officer for the Division. During his career, he went on to attain his masters degree in Political Science at West Chester University. He later attainted his Juris Doctorate degree from Northern Virginia Law School in 1990 and was admitted to the Washington, DC and Virginia Bars.
Al enjoyed working for several years in Washington, DC and later accepted a position in Wilmington, Delaware with Morris James, LLP as their Personal Injury Group Manager. Al was a part time adjunct professor at Wilmington University, Delaware Technical and Community College, and Goldey Beacom College. Following his retirement from Morris James, he received his real estate license in Delaware. He was also active with the Delaware Republican Party, where he ran to represent Wilmington's 16th district in 2018.
Al was a music aficionado. He was the lead vocalist and piano player with several bands over the years, including Society's Child, Two Plus Two, and Second Chance. He could often be found playing the piano and singing to his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
Al had a passion for gardening. He enjoyed many years working in the yard at his summer home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Anyone who had the pleasure of visiting knows of the meticulously manicured yard, but also knows he leaves behind a garage filled with junk no one knows what to do with.
Al also enjoyed jogging and cross country running competitions with his children, but not when they beat him.
