Emma came from Segesberg, Holstein Germany. When she was 9 years old she sailed on 27 Sept 1885 from Hamburg, Germany to New York on a ship called the Lessing of the "Hamburg-Amerika Linie".
She came with her maternal grandfather Andreas F Steffen age 56, and her aunt Catherine Steffen age 23. That means she came without her mom or dad. What a brave little girl. I wish I knew the story of what happened and why they left.
I did discover her parents married just 2 weeks before she was born, and her mom died 2 years later. I do not think Dad remarried but don't know. Her brother Otto has same parents she does,,
Her maiden name is spelled various ways but is Schramm, or perhaps Schram or Schrumm.

She left family behind in Germany. She had a brother Otto and who I think are sisters Elsie s and Mrs. Erna Matthies of Hamburg Germany, but since her mom died 2 years after Emma was born, maybe not. . I was told we had relatives killed by Hitler . Perhaps it was them. Both Gens and Schramm are Jewish names, but it could be the families converted generations ago. Everybody in this country belonged to the Laona Evangelical Church . Her brother Otto Schramm died in Hamburg in 1923. He'd be about 47 years old.
Her father's name was Bernard.F. Schramm and the Fredonia Censor says he came from Highwood, Montana (!) to live with her in 1923. He might have been only visiting cousins out in Missoula Montana, but sincerely they all could have been cowboys. HIghland is enormous, has hardly any people and used for cattle grazing.
Records indicate Emma's father then went home to Germany where he died. I hope I can find out more. Her mother was Sophia Louise Steffan.( Lizabeth (or Ilsabein appears to be a misread in one document with terrible handwriting ) Bernard's mom was a Steffan and he married a Steffan, seems they must have been related. .

"Miss Elsie Schram (sic) and Mrs Erna Mattheis of Hamburgh Germany came last week to spend some time with their sister Mrs. William Gens" - Fredonia Censor, Laona Letter, Wednesday August 22nd, 1923.
Emma 'sdaughter Elsie had died the year before and I think Emma was depressed a very long time.

" Mrs. William Gens received word last week of the death of her brother Otto Schramm at Hamburg Germany. Mrs. Gens' father B. F. Schramm came last week from Highwood Montana to make his home with Mr and Mrs Gens" Fredonia Censor Laona Letter Wednesday September 5th, 1923

I heard she first lived around Corry PA but an 1892 census suggests that by that time the Gens family in Laona were living with Emma Schramm still single age 16, her grandfather Andreas Steffan age 62, Crist Gens 55, Augusta age 50, William age 22 working as a laborer, Henry age 27 with his wife Katherine Steffan Gens age 31, Charles age 26 working as a tanner This survey doesn't list dwellings but they are all listed together. Catherine Steffan was Emma's aunt, and had married a Gens, which is how Emma and Will must have met. In other word, an aunt and niece Catherine and Emma, married 2 brothers Henry and William

Will was a grape farmer, and was tax collector at Pomfret . He had lost one arm in a farming accident many years before. If he had not survived this injury, I wouldn't be here. Emma worked at times as a cook at Lily Dale. After Will died she took in boarders.
She and Will had 4 children, Clarence, Elsie, Ester (later Mrs. Henry Haenel of Corry PA) and Mildred (later Mrs. Merritt V. Larson of Warren PA).
The family suffered a terrible blow when Elsie died at age 22. Emma's husband Will died 10 years later. Emma continued on, and sometimes visited her son in Pittsburgh. Emma died on one of those visits.
I think Emma planted this lovely Arbor Vitae bush between her daughter's and her husband's grave. Emma's is in the foreground.
I love you, Emma.

From an Obit for Minnie Steffen Schroeder in the Dunkirk Evening Observer Nov 6, 1940. , Emma Gens was her niece. Mrs Minnie Steffen Schroeder, born Dec 8, 1855 in Holstein Germany and lived in Hamburg Germany before moving to Laona 34 years before ( circa 1906) Minnie was a member of the Emmaneal Evangelical Church. She was the wife of William Schroeder and died at the age of 86 She was the sister of Mrs Catherine Gens (Mrs Henry Gens)

Emma would go down to New Jersey a few days every year to help out in the greenhouse of her niece Minnie Gens Boye and her florist husband.
-----------------------------------------------This is what it was like to travel on a German Steamship to America in Steerage accomadations. It was only for the very poro. "Steerage passengers [are] crowded into the hold of ... the Kaiser Wilhelm II, of the North German Lloyd line[. They] are positively packed like cattle, making a walk on deck when the weather is good, absolutely impossible, while to breathe clean air below in rough weather, when the hatches are down is an equal impossibility. The stenches become unbearable, and [the] division between the genders is not carefully looked after, and the young women who are quartered among the married passengers have neither the privacy to which they are entitled nor are they much more protected than if they were living promiscuously. The food, which is miserable, is dealt out of huge kettles into the dinner pails provided by the steamship company.[4]

There is a record in Hamburg Germany of the birth of Emma Dorothea Elise Schramm, and it could be her . but if it is what's the L. in her name?
