Although the surgeon had ordered nothing by mouth after midnight, he ate breakfast without the family knowing. After being discharged, his father found him dead in bed after aspiration from vomiting.
His grave is unmarked.
In 1901 his mother dedicated her book 'The Would-be-Goods' to 'My Dear Son Fabian Bland'.
