Charles Joseph Hughes, age 81, died January 28, 2008 at his home with his loving family at his side. Charlie was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on August 28, 1926, the son of the late John and Winifred (Kenny) Hughes. He was also raised by his loving aunts, the late Mary (Minnie) Finneran and Catherine (Kenny) Horan.

Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-eight years, Constance T. (Dilger); his eleven children, Charles Jude and his wife Helen of Moorestown, NJ, Christopher and his wife Shobha of New York City, NY, Cornelius and his wife Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) of Moorestown, NJ, Mary and her husband Brent Barbehenn of Lumberton, NJ, Jacqueline and her husband Judge Robert R. Bent of St. Johnsbury, VT, Daniel and his wife Beth of Moorestown, NJ, Patricia and her husband Robert Cooper of Moorestown, NJ, Barbara and her husband Daniel Murnane of Moorestown, NJ, Stephanie and her husband Mark Ford of Lafayette, CO, Peter and his wife Anne Marie of Newtown Square, PA, and Geraldine and her husband David Link of Denver, CO. Charlie is also survived by grandchildren, Meghan, Ryan, and Kelly Hughes, Cornelius, Jr., Kevin, Colleen, and Brigid Hughes, Kyle and Tara Barbehenn, Elliott and Merrill Bent, Sarah, Daniel, Jr., and Madeleine Hughes, Miles, Pierce, and Natalie Cooper, Keelia and Mary (Casey) Murnane, Jack, Peter, and Marguerite Ford, John (Jack), Theresa, and Charles Hughes, Sophie and Charles Link, as well as two great-grandchildren, Kevin Hughes and William (Liam) Tindall. Charlie was predeceased by his beloved brother, Jack, and his beloved granddaughter, Kira Barbehenn.

Charlie served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was sent to Japan in 1945. Always gifted in mathematics, he graduated from RCA Institute and Drexel University, B.S. Electrical Engineering (1958). He was also awarded a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania (1962). He was granted an Honorary Life Membership with Distinction in the Association of Scientists and Professional Engineering Personnel. Charlie worked at RCA and later General Electric at the Moorestown, NJ facility for four decades. Excelling in the field of radar, Charlie was on the original Aegis System development team, received numerous technical excellence awards and was also responsible for the award of several U.S. patents. Charlie and Connie lived in Kwajalein, Marshall Islands (a missile tracking station in the South Pacific) for four years in the mid-eighties.
Charlie was eternally curious and had many interests. He began sailing in 1965 on a one-design Thistle #930 "Toodle-oo" and later sailed out of Newport, RI and Rock Hall, MD on "Mist". Charlie and Connie were members of the Red Dragon Canoe Club in Edgewater Park, NJ for many years and later joined the Ida Lewis Yacht Club in Newport, RI. His other interests included photography and photo development, scuba diving, amateur radio (general class-code), windsurfing, and music.

Family and friends are invited to attend his viewing and visitation with the family on Thursday, 6:00 to 9:00 PM and Friday, 9:00 to 10:00 AM at McCHESNEY FUNERAL HOME, 30 West Main Street, Moorestown, NJ. Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM on Friday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Main Street, Moorestown. Burial: Mount Carmel Cemetery, Moorestown, NJ.
