Daughter of Harve Newton and Cora Alma Grigg Williams.
Flora had training as a bookkeeper, a seamstress and, in 1934, graduated as an RN from Protestant Hospital School of Nursing in Nashville, TN. She enjoyed her career as an OR scrub nurse. On a blind date in Nashville she met her soul mate and the love of her life, Howard Alfred Black. Flora's southern charm mixed with a feisty personality was a great match for Howard's fiery Yankee personality. They were married in Portland, ME on June 26, 1939. Howard started his practice as a neurosurgeon in Sacramento, CA in 1946. The two loved to entertain their friends in their home. They also enjoyed bridge and traveling together. In their later years they could simply enjoy sitting together, holding hands for hours. Flora liked to cook and to watch her flowers grow and bloom in her yard. Flora was an active member in the Sutter Hospital Auxiliary and Tuesday Club. Flora and Howard had one son, William Howard, in 1949. Flora would frequently say the day Bill was born was the happiest day of her life. In years to come she played a significant role in raising her tow grandsons, John William and Matthew William, sacrificing months at a time away from her husband caring for them. She spent the last nine years of her life in Roseville, CA.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her only sibling, Elizabeth Williams Innis. Flora is survived by her son, Bill and his wife, Amelia, of Dallas; her two grandsons, John and wife, Megan, and Matthew of Dallas; nephew, Kenneth Innis; and niece, Sandra of Tenn.
