Peninah -- called "Belle" and "Anna" -- was the sixth child of nine of Thomas Allum, 1818-1897, and his wife Matilda, 1820-1863. Born in Greene County, Pennsylvania in 1853, later that same year the Allum family migrated to Iowa where Peninah's mother died just 10 years later. At age 23 Peninah married John Robesky in 1876 in Polk County. In Iowa, six children were born to the couple between 1877 and 1898. A baker by trade, John Robesky transferred those skills to a self-owned bakery in Kern County, California. Peninah's 1945 California death record documents her first and middle names "Anne" and "Bell" and -- incorrectly -- her maiden name as "Allen." --DeeAnna
