His career started out in 1954 in the Los Angeles territory before joining the military service in 1958 whilst appearing in San Francisco towns on the side. The peak of his career started out in the 70's wrestling as a tag team wrestler alongside Ray "The Crippler" Stevens with Bobby "The Brain" Heenan as their manager in the AWA capturing the world tag team champions 3 times. His most famous stint in wrestling was when he was a singles star as the AWA World Heavyweight Champion (a title he went on to hold 4 times with his first run lasting almost 5 years) taking on the likes of Verne Gagne, Hulk Hogan, Curt Hennig, Stan Hansen, Jumbo Tsuruta & Jerry Lawler. He also made brief appearances for Giant Baba's All Japan Pro-Wrestling (AJPW) between 1978 until 1987 as both a singles & tag wrestler, teaming with Harley Race.
