Our faithful father, Paul L. Diehl, age 91, passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2022, surrounded by loved ones. He was born July 10, 1931, to Paul Florenz and Lucille Mills Diehl. He was raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and has one sister, Lela.
Paul was ten when his father was killed during World War II. At age 12, Paul was offered a full scholarship to McDonogh Military Academy, attending grade 7 through 12. After graduating from the Academy, Paul looked forward to serving a mission, but because of the changed age requirement at the time of the Korean War, his bishop encouraged him to attend Brigham Young University, where he pursued a degree in physics. While at BYU, he joined the United States Air Force ROTC and became a Cadet Colonel. On September 15, 1953, he married Mary Alice Calder in the Salt Lake Temple. After graduating from BYU in June of 1954, he went into the United States Air Force and became a jet fighter pilot. After completing his tour of duty, Paul and his family moved to Seattle, Washington, where he worked at the Boeing company for 34 years. Paul has served in many church callings throughout his life, including bishop, high councilor, regional agent for welfare services, stake president, area seventy for the North America Northwest Area, as a member of the quorum of seventy.
Paul and Mary Alice moved from the Seattle area in 1996, settling for 10 years in Meridian, Idaho, then moving to Pleasant Grove, Utah, to be near family. After Mary Alice died in 2012, he married Lynn Jeppsen in 2014. Lynn has faithfully been by his side serving both Paul and his family. He has always enjoyed the outdoors, working on his farms, building and beautifying, camping, fishing, jogging, and spending time helping his children with their projects. He loves his family and has always been a wonderful example of fatherhood and priesthood leadership to all who have known him.
He is survived by his wife, Lynn; his seven children, 38 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Lela. Preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Alice; and his parents.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in the Pleasant Grove Utah Manila Stake Center, 850 North 900 East, American Fork. Family and friends may attend a viewing Friday evening September 2, 2022 from 6-8 pm at the Stake Center and on Saturday from 10:00 - 10:45 am prior to funeral services. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery with full military honors.
