Lieutenant Earle, U.S. Naval Reserve, had been living in Westfield, MA when he enlisted and was a member of Attack Squadron 172, Carrier Air Wing 8 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS SHANGRI-LA (CVS-38).

On June 22, 1970, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4C) on a mission over South Vietnam. After leaving the SHANGRI-LA his engine kept losing power and he crashed into the South China Sea 2 miles ahead of his ship.

His remains were never recovered.

His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
