She was graduated from Trenton Central High School. She retired after 40 years of service from Westinghouse Electric Company and Lawrenceville Intermediate School as a teacher's aide. A lifelong member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. church in Trenton, Bernice served on its Trustee Board, the Senior Stewardess Board, and the Usher Board and was also a missionary. During her years as a member, Bernice sang in both the L.S. Odom Choir and the Cathedral Choir, was the chairperson of the Board of Christian Education and was one of the founding members and president of the Mt. Zion A.M.E. Federal Credit Union, having served faithfully for many years. She served as an officer and delegate on the Arc/Mercer Board of Directors for over 50 years, a group established in 1950 to educate and provide recreation for children with mental retardation and physical disabilities. During her years in Raleigh, Bernice found friendship, support and fellowship in Christ with House of Joy, Inc.
Bernice was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 51 years, the late Barney H. Oliver Jr. She is survived by her three children, sons, Reginald Oliver and Douglas (Danita) Oliver and daughter Debra (Carl) Harwell; two sisters Yvonne Kohl Oliver and Margaret Kohl Martin; two brothers-in-law; four sister-in-laws; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her Godson, John Sapp; her devoted friends Gloria Burrell, Naomi (Butter) Tunstall and Gladys Carmichael, all of Trenton as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
