James and Edith Baum had a popular drive-in restaurant known as Baum's Broiled Burgers. It was located just across the street from Abilene's Fair Park and Zoo on South 7th Street. Baum's was one of the first places that had carhops. The burgers good and Baum's became a regular stop along with Welty's, on South 14th, and Mack's, on North 1st, on what was called the "circle route" in late 1950's and early 1960's and the business really took off. Their son, Jim, worked there there as a teenager.

During the mid to late 1960's, a lot of burger chains came in and Baum's lost it's luster and business declined. Both Baum's and the Fair Park Zoo are gone now but, the building and covered parking remain and is now, Clem's Barber Shop.

The Baum's lived for at 20 years on North 14th Street, not far off of Grape Street.
