Right out of High School Rex was employed as a Bell hop in the Park Avenue Hotel in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. This was where he first met Marmie.
Rex and Marmie were married before Pearl Harbor was bombed. Rex was already in the Navy assigned to the USS Astoria, a heavy cruiser which was in dry dock in Vallejo, California. As a 21 year Navy man Rex spent a lot of time in the Orient and really liked Japan and Hong Kong.

“Rex Torton Snook of Northeast Portland, a retired real estate appraiser, died of cancer Sunday in his home. A private memorial service will be held Saturday. He was 73.
He was born Nov. 15, 1917, in Hardtner, Kan., but moved to Portland with his family at age 5. He graduated from Franklin High School. He married Margaret Marmie Chamberlain on June 11, 1941. He served in the Navy for 21 years until his retirement in 1959. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Following his military service, he worked for Tektronix, Inc. and as a real estate salesman before becoming an appraiser. He retired in 1990.
Survivors besides his wife include his 2 daughters, 2 sons, a sister, Viola Hill of Portland; and 10 grandchildren.”
