William Leveson-Gower, 4th Earl Granville.

Vice Admiral William Spencer Leveson-Gower, 4th Earl Granville KG, GCVO, CB, DSO was the younger son of Granville George Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl Granville. He was a naval cadet in 1894 and went on to serve in China two years later. In 1900 he was a Sub-Lieutenant, and became a full Lieutenant two years later. For six years he commanded a number of destroyers, and was made Commander in 1913. During the First World War he led a number of destroyer divisions, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. (DSO)
The other decorations/awards are Knight of the Garter, Grand Cross of the Victorian Order and Companion of the Bath., awarded in 1932

After the war, he was posted to a destroyer flotilla in the Mediterranean for two years, and in 1924 he became Chief of Staff to Admiral Sir William Goodenough. In 1929 he became aide-de-camp to the King, and in 1931, as a Rear Admiral, he took command of the coast of Scotland. In 1935 he was promoted Vice Admiral. In 1937, he became Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man, and became the fourth Earl Granville on the death,in 1939, of his brother. In 1945, he became the second Governor of Northern Ireland. He had married Lady Rose Constance Bowes-Lyon, the second surviving daughter of the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and elder sister to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. She died in 1967 and is buried at Glamis. He died at the age of 72 and was cremated at Golders Green Crematorium, and it is thought that his ashes are interred beneath the memorial stone in this old churchyard.
