Hope resident Howard Joseph Freese, 74, died May 8 at Providence Hospital after a lengthy illness. A visitation was held at Kehl's Forest Lawn Chapel. A funeral was held at Central Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ronald Martinson officiating and the Rev. Frederick Lampe assisting. Burial took place this spring at Angelus Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Charles Brewster, Charles Brodahl, Tom Haukebo, Tito Kagimoto, Roger Rasmussen and Tom Reid.

Mr. Freese was born March 16, 1917, in Chicago. He had been a merchant marine during World War II. He moved to Alaska in 1947 from Michigan and worked for the Alaska Railroad from 1948 to 1968. He then worked for Brewsters Department Store for a few years. He then completely retired and began traveling with his wife, Evelyn, until her death in September 1988. Mr. Freese was a 31-year member of Moose Lodge No. 1534 and was a member of Central Lutheran Church. He loved fishing, driving and dancing, and he had a great love for Alaska and its people, especially the people in Hope, according to his family.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Howard and Rebecca of Anchorage and Robert and Marilyn of Flagstaff, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the American Heart Association, 2330 E. 42nd Ave., Anchorage 99508.
