Otho Monroe Smith was born in the Virgil, KS. area on Dec. 21, 1890 to Jackson C. Smith & Susan (Miller) Smith. He continued to live in and around Virgil, Kansas and the Toronto, KS. areas until adulthood. After the death of his mother in 1905 and father in 1912 Otho and two of his brothers Alfred and Alvin move to Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents 2 sisters Minerva Smith & Minnie B. Gilispie. He was survived by three brothers Alfred Smith and Alvin Curtis Smith of Indian Valley, John Smith of Virgil, Kansas. One brother William Smith location and status at time of otho's death is unknown.

Although his head stone read 1891 his father's military records stated Otho's birth to be Dec. 21, 1890

Otho Smith a resident of the Valley, passed February 12, after an attatack of pneumonia following influenza, at the home of D.K. Lindsay near Weiser where he was working. Mr. Smith came from Kansas about seven years ago and has been in the employ of Mr. Lindsay most of the time since. He was a hard-working,highly-respected young man who was liked by all who knew him. He leaves two brothers, Alfred and Kirk, both residents here. Internment was made in the Indian Valley cemetery on February 13. Service were conducted by Rev. McDonald of Cambridge.
