Mr. Billy (Bill) Lamont Scruggs passed away on September 2, 2022, at Mobile Infirmary.  Bill spent his entire life in Excel, Alabama. He graduated from Excel High School in 1957 where he was a star athlete, football being his favorite sport. He was a member of the United States National Guard, Monroeville Unit. Always a hard worker, he farmed for many years, delivered milk for Foremost Dairies, and worked at Vanity Fair Mills before beginning his long and successful career with ALFA Insurance. He was an agent for ALFA for 27 years from 1968 to 1995, and was one of the first inductees of the ALFA Insurance Hall of Fame. After his retirement, he worked for several years as a Loan Officer for The Bank in Frisco City. His work ethic, good personality, and concern for other people helped him to exceed in all he did and endeared him to many.

In addition to his work life, he was very involved in his community. He was a long-time member of the Excel United Methodist Church where he was the Song Leader. He served on several Boards for organizations including the Peoples Exchange Bank, American Legion, the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort, Southern Pine Electric Cooperative, and the Restoration Committee for the historical Mt. Pleasant Church in Eliska. Bill enjoyed playing golf and fishing on a regular occasion until his illness began late in 2021. He also spent many mornings with friends at AJ's Café catching up on local news. His family, however, was his number one priority. He enjoyed spending time with them, and always made sure they were taken care of and knew they were loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Taft Scruggs and Willie Mae Manning Scruggs; his son, Joe Allen; his brothers, Jimmy Scruggs, Ray Scruggs, Randall Scruggs, and Mike Scruggs; and his sister, Peggy Baggett.

Survivors include his wife, Gwen Hinson Scruggs of Excel; his son, Monty Scruggs and wife Kay of Greenville; his daughter, Mona Scruggs Dominguez and husband, Ariel of Auburn; four grandchildren, Claire (Dusty) Medley, Kathryn (Carey) Stallworth, Sarah Juliana Dominguez and Amelia Dominguez; and four great grandchildren, Mason Medley, Jackson Medley, Steven Stallworth, and Margot Stallworth.
