Arlyn K. Mitchell, age 88, of rural Maquon, Illinois died Saturday, January 26, 2008 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois following a short illness.

He was born January 17, 1920 near Avon, Illinois, the son of Clarence and Bertha Dallefeld Mitchell. Arlyn was married to Harriet Harper in June 1944 and were partners in life. Harriet preceded Arlyn in death by two days on January 24, 2008.

He farmed with his wife, Harriet near Gilson and then near Maquon for half a century. Arlyn served in World War II from 1941 – 1944 in the Pacific Theatre with the United States Marine Corp, 2nd Marine Division. Sergeant Mitchell was wounded twice in the Battle of Tarawa and received the Purple Heart with one bar along with other medals. Arlyn belonged to the Maquon American Legion Post # 1099 where he served as commander among other offices. Arlyn remained a member of the Harry W. Philblad American Legion Post # 749 of Knoxville, Illinois. Arlyn was also a member of the Maquon Masonic Lodge # 530, AF & AM and the Knox County Farm Bureau. Arlyn was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life.

Arlyn is survived by two children, Jerry (Susan) Mitchell of Austin, Texas and Kristy (Dave) Rouland of Knoxville, Illinois; four sisters, Phyllis Jean Cheeseman of Springfield, Oregon, Ila Rooker of Indianapolis, Indiana, Velma Harris and Marilyn Howarter, both of Galesburg, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Burial will be at the Maquon Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post # 285 of Galesburg, Illinois.
