" Houston Sylvanus Baker LAKE MARY, FL - Houston Sylvanus Baker, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, surrounded by his family after a long, valiant battle with cancer. Until the very last day, he maintained a cheerful, generous spirit for which he was known all his life. A resident of Hamilton Square, NJ; Sun City, AZ, and Lake Mary, FL, Houston was born in Newark, NJ, on Aug. 23, 1924. His childhood was spent in Plainfield, NJ. When World War II approached and while still in high school, he joined the Marines as part of the First Marine Division-Recon Company. He experienced the brutal battles on Peleliu and Okinawa in the Pacific theatre. After the war, his company took him to China as part of the liberation campaign. He was a proud Marine to the end. Upon his return to the United States, he attended Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ, where he met his wife, who played the piano for the Glee Club. Later in life, Houston had a delivery business, like his ancestors of the late 1800s. Both businesses were named Baker Express. Houston's love of family, his deep faith, his story-telling, driving and travel, toy trucks and his quick wit mark a life that dearly will be missed. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margaret Giudice Baker; his three children and their spouses, Sherry Lynn and Thomas, Mark Houston and Barbara, Derek Sylvanus and Jan; grandchildren, Joshua Houston, Claire Margaret, Neil Giudice and Jaimee, Russell and Sara, Colin, Margaret Elizabeth, Rachel, and great-grandchildren, Spencer Joshua, Charlotte Leigh and Brianna. He was also brother-in-law of Harry and Shirley Giudice, and grandfather of the beloved late Mark Houston Baker Jr. Private memorial services are planned.
