Jackie Leroy Burk died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, in Mineral Wells.
Funeral: 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Chapel in Mineral Wells. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Interment: Woodland Park Memorial Gardens following the service.
The eldest of seven children, Jackie was born to William Farmer Burk and Goldie Hazel Taulman Burk on Sept. 18, 1930, in Wiley, Colo. Jackie moved to Waverly with his family when he was 12 years old and he attended Waverly School. He worked on the farm in Waverly with the family during World War II where they used German prisoners of war to help work the fields.
Jackie joined the National Guard at age 21 and then joined the Army. His basic training was at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. After his basic training, Jackie received heavy equipment training and was with the engineers during the first 18 years of his career in the Army. He was especially proud of his involvement in the Korean War where he helped build the George Libby bridge. Jackie spent two tours in Vietnam and two more in Korea.
After returning from the Korean War, he was transferred to Camp Wolters in Mineral Wells, where he met his wife of 32 years, Vernell. Jackie made his home in Mineral Wells. He was decorated with the Purple Heart and the Korean War Service Medal along with many other medals.
He retired from the military after 23 years and started a construction company doing several building projects in Mineral Wells, including the second-floor addition to the hospital. This is the same hospital where he passed away.
He was a great storyteller, enjoyed by all who knew him. Some of the stories you would not be able to tell if they were true or not, and it didn’t matter to Jackie, he simply enjoyed telling the stories.
He was an avid motorcycle rider, owning several motorcycles over a lifetime and rode many, many miles with family and friends. He was a 32nd-degree Mason.
The family wants to thank his friends who gave so much of their time and energy in taking care of Jackie for us. We would like to give thanks to some special friends who cared for our loved one: Jim and Louise Oakerson, Rana and Duane Downs, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Whetstone, Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Robertson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William F. and Goldie H. Burk; wife, Vernell Burk; daughter, Frances Faile; second wife, Anita Burk; and brother, William Dean Burk.
Survivors: He leaves behind a son, Joe E. Burk and wife, Donna of Burleson; daughters, Janice Pippin and husband, Holland of Mineral Wells, Terry Madigan of Loveland Colo., Linda Burk of Wellington, Colo.; four grandsons; eight granddaughters; several great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews; many good friends in the Mineral Wells area; brothers, Lloyd Burk of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Elden Burk and wife, Betty of Wellington, Colo.; sisters, Doris E Lockman of Wellington, Colo., Nancy L.
