Edith grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. In the early 1970s she was living and working in a hotel in Los Angeles, and had been involved with hotels most of her life. Her grandfather, an Italian immigrant, owned a hotel near the present Union Pacific Depot in Salt Lake City; and her parents owned a couple of hotels near South Temple and West Temple in the early part of the century, until they moved to San Francisco in 1917.
In the early 1960s, Edith owned a downtown Los Angeles residential hotel. She also worked at the Statler Hilton hotel.

Her only son Richard Crenna, became a Hollywood actor.
In October 1960 he married Joan Grisham, in the Shatto Chapel of the First Congregational Church in Los Angeles. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Francis Grisham. They made their home in Burbank, CA.
