Born at 22 Beechnut Street Belfast County Antrim, son of Wilson Cairns and Maria Cairns (Wilson) - Also, brother of Emma, Isabella,George, Wilson, Mary and Margaret.

Enlisted in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in March 1912 - discharged after a month when it was discovered he was under age.
Joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker. Served on a number of ships, but based at HMS Pembroke in Kent.
Killed during the Chatham Air Raid on 3rd September 1917.
