Dwaine Austin Acord, 71 of Lester lost his battle with cancer, heart disease, and many work-related injuries surrounded by his loving family on September 21, 2022. He was the son of the late S. Austin Acord and Elsie Massey Acord of Lester. He was a 1969 graduate of Trap Hill High School where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. He was President of the Future Farmers of America.
He was still employed at the time of his death with Landstar Ranger, Inc. with a total of 17 years of service. He had 25 years in the coal mining industry where he held many titles. He and his wife Carolyn owned The Korner Packette in Lester for 10 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 95 of Beckley, WV and a former member of the Beckley Moose Lodge.
His love of kids participating in sports will be remembered by all. He loved coaching and mentoring young kids at his store. Dwaine is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carolyn Showalter Acord, his high school sweetheart who loved him through thick and thin. One sister, Rita Wix of Fairdale. Three daughters: Cathy and Rob Meier of Winder, GA. Dana Quickle and Tim Reynolds of St. Albans, WV. Megan Acord and Laura Strickland of Tornado, WV. One granddaughter Carly Quickle and Cody Feazelle of Tornado, WV. Four grandsons: Cade Quickle of St. Albans, WV, Holt Criddle of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Hunter Criddle of Beaver, WV, Christian Cates of St. Albans, WV. Two great grandchildren: Noah and Chloe Quickle of Tornado and many nieces and nephews.
Dwaine will always be remembered by his family and friends as a true lover of horses and John Wayne. A true cowboy. You should have seen him ride. In later years, the horse competitions transitioned to trucks. He was the proud owner of his rigs and was strict on his maintenance schedules. He loved trucking almost as much as his horses and it was something he and Carolyn did together as a team. Enough cannot be said about what a wonderful man he was. He was much loved by his family and friends. Dwaine, you will be greatly missed by everyone who knew you. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 27th from 6pm-8pm at Melton Mortuary in Beckley, WV. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospital or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
