Remaining at the hospital for three weeks, just one week prior to his death, he was brought home, being temporarily better. His death was somewhat of a surprise to the community because most people were under the impression that he was on the way to recovery. For forty years, Mr. Keithley was identified with the mercantile life of Lewisburg in one capacity or another. Losing his father when quite young, he learned the baker's trade and came to Lewisburg forty years ago to engage in the bakery and confectionary business. Following that for five or six years he then entered the F. J. Wilson store as a clerk, Mr. Wilson in the meantime having become his father-in-law. Later he purchased an interest in the store and upon the retirement of Mr. Wilson, Mr. Keithley, his brother, Amos Keithley, and Dr. W. P. Klepinger organized a stock company, known as the S. N. Keithley Company, which took over the Wilson business. At the end of five or six years, the corporation was dissolved, and Mr. Keithley took the men's clothing, grocery and shoe department while the dry goods department was sold to R. W. Ayers. Later Mr. Keithley sold the grocery department to his son-in-law, R. F. Bauman. At the time of his death, he was still the owner of the shoe and clothing departments. For years he was a director in The Lewisburg Telephone Company, selling his interest less than a year ago.
He was an active member of the Lewisburg Methodist church and filled almost, if not all of the lay offices, in the church, besides being superintendent of the Sunday School at various times. For years he taught the men's Bible class and was meeting in that capacity at the time his demise. Fraternally, he was in Odd Fellow and a Mason. In recent years, he was quite a traveler and had motored to almost every section of the United States, especially enjoyed Florida and had spent a part of his winters there for several years.
His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Ada Wilson Keithley, two daughters, Mrs. Freda Bauman, Lewisburg, and Mrs. Lucile Marx of New Madison, one son, Joseph, at home, one brother, Amos Keithley of San Diego, Calif., and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Merritt and Miss Esther Keithley, both of Los Angeles, Calif.
Funeral was held Monday afternoon from the local M. E. church with Rev. W. F. Cummings officiating, assisted by Rev. D. F. Wogoman of West Unity, Ohio, a former Lewisburg pastor, and Rev. Dittmar of Trinity Lutheran church. The I. O.O. F. Lodge held its funeral service Saturday evening at the home and the Masonic order Sunday afternoon.
