Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301 Attn: Gift Processing.Richard W "Doodle" Varley was a US Marine Corps Korean War Veteran. Part of the Chosin Few Marines who fought in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. He served in Easy Company 2nd Battalion 5th Marines. He was awarded the purple heart and several clusters for wounds received in action. He was a resident of Grapeland for 22 years. He was a lifetime member of the D.A.V. He retired from Eastern Airlines where he worked in air freight. He was a member of various Baptist Churches throughout his life and was a devote Christian.

He was missing the little finger and the finger next to it on his left hand from the middle finger joint out. This injury was sustained on a drilling rig he was working on right after the end of the Korean war when he returned home. A coworker on the rig had leaned forward close to the drill stem and a moving chain looped around his neck. Doodle (as he was called) reached out and snagged the moving chain pulling it free of the man's neck before the man was killed. Because of the speed the chain was moving he was not able to get his hand free and the fingers were ripped off. Because of frostbite damage he had received in Korea the doctors were not able to reattach the fingers.
