OBIT from Keokuk County News, March 30, 1905: "" Died, March 24th, of typhoid fever, Mrs. Carrie V. Hayes, aged 38 years, 9 months and 27 days. Mrs. Carrie Hayes was born in Franklin county, Indiana, May 27,1866. Came to Iowa with her parents in 1868 and lived in Martinsburg until 1873, then moved with her parents to the farm know as their old homestead north of Mt. Zion church. She was married to Geo. W. Hayes October 1, 1885 and moved to a farm near Nugent. In December, 1888, they moved to their present home. To this union were born six children, Bessie, Maude, Howard, Anna, Ralph and Nellie, all living at the present time. She made a public profession of saving faith in Christ in December, 1904, and united with the Mt. Zion M. E. church. She was greatly loved and esteemed by the whole church and community. Being always ready to sacrifice for the sake of others, she proved beautifully that scripture, "Bear ye one another's burdens." The Lord wonderfully blessed her the last few hours of her life on earth and gave her the power so speak to all her friends and loved ones, after giving a bright and beautiful testimony, of her preparation to depart this life. She leaves to mourn her departure an affectionate husband, six loving children, four sisters and one brother, with numerous relatives and friends.
A form is taken from our home,
A voice we loved is stilled,
And death has left an aching void
That never can be filled.
Funeral services were held at Mt. Zion church Saturday, March 25th, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Starr, after which internment was made in the cemetery near by."" (Obit Notes by Jeff Bruce: sisters were - Mary Elizabeth, Fannie Webb, Laura Isabelle, Ida Phillis, and brother Robert Henry.)
