Edward P. Acosta, a prolific entertainer and teller of tales; an avid striker of the golf ball, piano player; an amateur gambler at penny poker and a dedicated, loving and beloved family man, passed away on Friday, October 7, 2022.
Always full of life, he was 92 years young.
Eddie was born on June 20, 1930 to Emilio N. Acosta and Octaviana Porter Acosta in Hurley, New Mexico where he made his home and lived his life.
The Acosta family were territorial pioneers of the Pinos Altos and La Cienega de San Vicente townships and mourn his passing.
Eddie's father, Emilio, died before Eddie graduated from Hurley High School in 1949. Eddie was awarded a basketball scholarship to New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, now New Mexico State University. Upon leaving for school in Las Cruces he stopped the car he was riding in between Hurley and Deming and hitchhiked back to Hurley. As the last of nine children to leave the home, he returned to take care of his mother, Octaviana, and soon took a job with Kennecott Copper Corporation in Hurley.
Eddie married María Socorro Molinar in 1954 and they remained together 51 years until her passing in 2005.
Eddie was preceded in death by eight siblings, Emilia Avilucea, Octavia Kramer, Gloria Tarazon, Josephine Domínguez, Clorinda Meyers, Rufus P. Acosta, Alfonso P. Acosta and Arnold P. Acosta. Eddie was also preceded in death by his son, Daniel Rene Acosta and a great-grandson, David Joshua Baeza.
Eddie is survived by his son, Xavier Edward Acosta (Rebecca) of Las Cruces and his daughter, Catherine Lorraine Russo (Jason) of Silver City. Eddie is also survived by four grandchildren, Joshua Baeza, Evangeline Acosta Villalpando (Robert), Veronica Acosta Domínguez (Edgar) and Elizabeth Acosta Martínez (José) and ten great-grandchildren.
During his evolution with Chino, Eddie's work for Chino Mines began on the mill "copper floor" after high school where he and others would load copper ingots by tossing the heavy bars of copper by hand onto pallets for shipping.
Interrupted in 1949 for two years by his service in the United States Army during the Korean War, he continued to work at Kennecott Copper Corporation until his retirement from Kennecott. Immediately following his first retirement Eddie was hired by Phelps Dodge Corporation who purchased Chino, and thereafter Freeport-McMoRan, until his second retirement.
Also, during his early years with Chino, Eddie attended and received his bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Western New Mexico University in 1963. Eddie was promoted to management by Kennecott Copper Corp., as one of the first Hispanic workers to be employed at such levels at Chino.
Eddie left wonderful memories for family and friends of his gregarious personality, humor, kindness, and love.
Eddie will be remembered and missed by all.
