Olympic Champion. He was a gold medal winner in the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne, Australia in the men's 4 × 100 metres relay. He was noted for his exceptional speed out of the starting blocks and this speed earned him his nickname "Human Sputnik". He attended Western Michigan University, where he won the 1958 NCAA championship in the 100 yd. He also competed in the 1963 Pan American Games where he won a gold medal in the 4x100 m relay and a bronze in the 100 metres race. After retiring from the track as a runner he became a coach of a women's track team in Chicago. He passed away from the effects of cancer at the age of 61.
