Mr. H. W. Houston of Monroe died last Thursday morning. He had been in a feeble condition for some time and his death was not unexpected. Some time ago his mind gave way and on account of the crowded condition of the hospital at Morganton it was not possible to gain entrance there, and he gradually became worse and finally suffered a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Houston was in his sixty-second year, having been born in Monroe November 26th, 1844. He was a son of the late Patterson Houston and was well known throughout the county. When the war broke out he volunteered and went out with McRae's company in the fifth regiment, but afterwards, on account of youth, he was discharged and again volunteered and served throughout the war as a member of Capt. McCauley's company of artillery,. Mr. Houston spent many years as a school teacher. The funeral was conducted by Rev. C. A. G. Thomas from the residence Friday morning.
