Beverly Bernard, world traveler, brilliant psychologist, loving and tolerant wife, avid reader, devoted cousin, mentor, chosen mom, business owner, lover of animals, travel, restaurants, casinos, celebrations of any sort, particularly if they involved gifts, and connoisseur of 'all things chocolate', died suddenly on October 8, 2022. The probable cause of death was a pulmonary embolism.

Beverly was born in Washington DC on October 13, 1948. She grew up in the D.C. area, attended Albert Einstein High School, and then the University of Maryland. Graduating with a Master of Social Work (MSW), she practiced as a psychiatric social worker for many years. Her career in psychology was a veritable cornucopia; she worked with children, adults, families, and couples, and was particularly adept at working in the stressful environment of an Emergency Room. As an administrator with Kaiser Permanente, she managed a multi-disciplinary department where she provided guidance and leadership. Beverly was a founding partner of Coastal Psychiatric Medical Associates in Del Mar, California until she retired in 2019.

Her love for travel began at a young age and continued throughout her life. Motivated by her curiosity about the world, Beverly was willing to go anywhere with her husband, Cress, and became a true world traveler, visiting all seven continents. She was an amazingly good sport, willing to do almost anything, and even though she hated cold weather, she not only visited Antarctica, but her most recent adventure was an excursion into the Arctic, when she came within a few hundred miles of the North Pole.

But her favorite trips were fueled by her love of animals: her three trips to Africa. This was also evident in her home life, where she always had a pet. She insisted upon having cats, even though cat dander made her sick as a dog. But her closest relationship was with her beloved bichon, Salmon. Beverly and Salmon loved their visits to Scripps Memorial Hospital, where Salmon was a true natural as a certified hospital therapy dog for many years, Beverly enjoyed advertising to the world her devotion to Salmon on her personalized license plate.

In 1995 Beverly married the love of her life, Cress, and she enriched his life for the next 27 years. Others described their relationship as the perfect Ying and Yang. They were two completely different people, opposite in many ways, but united in others. They truly complimented one another's strengths and weaknesses perfectly; together they completed one another.

Everyone who ever met Beverly described her the same way: sweet, modest, sincere, caring, loving, welcoming, nurturing, giving, and generous. Countless people have stories about how Beverly changed the direction of their lives. Beverly's special gift was her natural ability to make everyone she touched feel as if they were the most important person in the world. Beverly was a person with an amazing inner and outer beauty and a true heart of gold. She was a gift to everyone she touched.

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents Benjamin and Dorothy (Bramow) Schiffman, her brother Sterling Schiffman, her sister Beth Schiffman, and her beloved dog Salmon. She is survived by her loving husband, Cress Bernard, her four first cousins; Elaine Bramow, Robyn Bramow (Scott), Mark Bramow, and Steven Bramow (Terry), her unofficial daughter, Anna Walden, and her huge, special circle of very close friends.

Memorial Services will be held at Congregation Beth El, 8660 Gilman Dr., La Jolla, CA 92037 on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Helen Woodward Center, San Diego Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
