Artist. After first serving in the US Navy he graduated in 1956 with a BFA from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. After graduation he moved to San Francisco and began his work as a painter and later a sculptor. He worked as a sign painter during the day and as an expressionist painter at night. He was first known for his kinetic sculptures from the 1950's and was part of the Beatnik movement. In 1961, he had a solo exhibition at the California Palace Legion of Honor. In the 1970's, he focused on steel and bronze sculptures with welding. In 1980, be received the President's Scholar Award from California State University in San Jose. In 2008, he the received the Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award from the International Sculpture Center. His most well know art was his Folded Square Alphabets, Numericals, Folded Circle, Donuts, and Steel Watercolors. His work can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Museum Ludwig, Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Kroller-Muller Museum and Sculpture Garden, San Francisco's Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall, Grounds For Sculpture sculpture park in Hamilton, NJ, the city of Cologne, Germany, and in the city of Berlin as well as many others. He taught at the San Francisco Art Institute and was a professor at California State University in San Jose and instructor at the California College of Arts and Crafts.
