She was a niece of Jane Austen's, through her eldest brother James and family friend Mary Lloyd. She contributed to the first family authorized/family contributed memoir about Jane Austen entitled "A Memoir of Jane Austen" written by her brother James Edward Austen-Leigh in 1869. A second edition published in 1871 was much expanded to include more letters and biographical material from her and other family members. She published her own reminiscences about her aunt Jane Austen entitled "My Aunt Jane Austen."
