Mr, Stables was born in Erswick, England, June 9, 1874, and came to the United States in 1890 to make his home with a sister. For a time he was employed at the Traverse City State hospital as a gardener. May 16th. 1898 he enlisted in Company M. 34th. Michigan Volunteer infantry. He was mustered out on December 8th. 1898. He again enlisted in the 37th. Infantry and spent two and one-half years in the Philipine Islands. He was discharged from service in 1901.
On April 15th. 1903, he was united in marriage to Maude A. Slocum. to this union were born six children.Mr. Stables was a past commander of the United Spanish War Veterans of this city and was also an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. serving as their Chaplin for a number of years.
