When Rowena Hammond, and her twin brother Robert Donnell (Don Junior), were born on August 29, 1919, in Paris, Texas, their father, Robert, was 32 and their mother, Elizabeth, was 36. She and twin brother had five older siblings.
The baby girl appeared as "Raina H Shacalford" in the 1920 federal census. Worse, her mother appeared as "Rosa Shacalford," causing untold confusion for family historians.
Rowena was just three years old when she died of a crushed chest in an auto accident. We do not know the details of the accident, or why the registrar stated on her death certificate that her date of birth and parents' names were "unobtainable."
Rowena's tiny remains were laid to rest at Providence Cemetery in Paris according to her death certificate. However, there may have not been money to set a proper headstone on her grave.
