Bob worked a full-time midnight-to-eight job with Frisco Railroad while a very sleepy student at Fort Scott (Kansas) Community College and Pittsburg (Kansas) State University. He then served in the U.S. Army from May 3, 1956, until May 2, 1958. After basic training in Fort Hood, Texas, he served as an instructor at the Adjutant General's School, Fort Harrison, Ind..

Following military service, Bob returned to Fort Scott and joined The Western Casualty and Surety Company as a trainee. Over the 11 years, he worked several jobs at The Western. He then joined The Ohio Insurance Institute, Columbus, Ohio, an insurance trade association, where he served as director of information.
