04/20/1862 - From a camp of the 1st AL Cavalry near Corinth, MS, "Lieut. [James] Buell of the 1st Ala Regiment of Cavalry having applied for a certificate on which to ground an application for leave of absence, I do hereby certify that I have carefully examined this officer and find that he has a severe case of 'diarea' which has resisted medical treatment and that he has suffered from the same eleven days and during that time has been unfit for duty. I further declare my belief that he will not be able to resume his duties in a less period than Fourteen days and that a visit to South Ala for the above period would restore him to health. Geo. Abercrombie, Asst. Surgeon, 1st Ala Cav Reg."
05/19/1862 - From Head Quarters, 1st Reg. Ala. Cavalry, Saltillo, MS, "This is to certify that I have carefully examined Capt. Jno. G. Stokes and find him suffering severely with stricture of the urethra, accompanied with Orchitis. I therefore pronounce him totally unfit for duty at the present time, and think he will not be able to discharge his duties in a less period than thirty (30) days. I therefore recommend a leave of absence for that period. Geo. A. Abercrombie, Asst. Surgeon in charge, 1st Ala. Cav. Reg."
