Robert was the son of Henry Abbott and Elizabeth Guyton, who reportedly sent eight sons into service in the Civil War, of whom four survived.

Robert enlisted at Spartanburg as a Private in Company "K", Palmetto Sharpshooters (a/k/a "Jenkins' Regiment ") on 13 April 1861. He was wounded in action at the Battle of Glendale on 30 June 1862, and died at the "South Carolina Hospital" in Manchester (then an independent city, now part of the City of Richmond). His grave is unmarked.
